1973: A Very Good Year!

I don't have any actual pics from my very first public magic-show, which was part of my high school's variety show in 1973! I DO remember several things, though: I did a "vanishing-card" sort of thing as my opener using a bright, multi-color silk/rayon kerchief, and some Mentalism, as I was a HUGE fan of the "Amazing Kreskin": (I still am!) a two-slate effect involving a piece of chalk that mysteriously "crawls across" one of the slates, writing the name of a spectator's selected card in the process, and a dart-throwing stunt wherein another audience-member throws a dart at a large piece of cardboard containing miniature-versions of an entire deck of playing cards, and the card that the dart impales matches perfectly a prediction of that same card which I previously reversed in another pack and which was held for safe-keeping by another audience-member! Not bad for a 14-year-old neophyte conjurer, if I do say so myself! It was my VERY FIRST appearance onstage, and I wasn't nervous at all! In fact, I felt more at home up there, performing for the hundreds of school attendees, then I was off-stage! For the next year-and-a-half, a couple of the "cool" kids in my high school yelled out at me as I passed them, "Hey, Houdini!" Not bad for a nice Jewish boy from Montreal, trying to mimic both Kreskin as a performer, and dressing like "Lincoln Hayes" from "Mod Squad"! #NorthMountHighSchool #Montreal #ThoseWereTheDays #TheModSquad #LincHayes
