Introduction to "I AM Magic Mike Likey! Collector's Edition"

Here's the introduction to my book, "I AM Magic Mike Likey! The Collector's Edition". If you enjoyed my TV-show in Winnipeg from 1985-1994, you'll LOVE this book, which is filled with humorous anecdotes and LOTS of pictures!
It's September 2016, and I sit here and ponder all of my blessings with wonder and awe. At this point, I'm looking forward to spiritually-counseling my Theocentric Psychology clients, to holding a few metaphysically-oriented workshops, to writing several more books, and to the several magic-shows I'll be performing over the next few months, in addition to learning and honing more magic-tricks!
It was in June of 1985 that I started video-taping the premiere episode, 58-minutes in length, of my television program "Kiddie Cabaret", which subsequently aired the following week on VPW 13 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was a guaranteed pilot, which essentially meant that I was given approval to record subsequent 30 (really 28) minute shows ad-infinitum for airing at a weekly, regular time. I was only twenty-nine at the time, but I had dreamed of having my own television show (producing and starring in one) ever since watching "Magic Tom's Surprise Party" and "The Magic Land of Alakazam" on TV as a child! These shows featured a magician who did amazing illusions week-after-week, and I never tired at the wonders and marvels that these fellows had to offer. Every day (in Magic Tom Auburn's case) at 4:00 p.m. after school I sat myself down in front of the TV to see what tricks Magic Tom would do this time. He also featured a sci-fi adventure serial from the 1940's, "Rocket Man" which I embraced wholeheartedly as well. In those days in Montreal, Canada, all we had in the way of Canadian children's programming on television (besides American shows) was "The Friendly Giant", "Razzle Dazzle", "Tween Set", "Butternut Square", (later "Mr. Dressup") and "The Forest Rangers", all produced in Toronto, as well as "Johnny Jellybean", "Romper Room", and "Chez Helene", all produced in Montreal, in addition to Magic Tom Auburn's "Surprise Party". What a surprise indeed it was for me daily as I eagerly soaked up the tricks and sleight-of-hand that Magic Tom did; Tom was such an influence on young, Montreal, aspiring magicians, that they all called themselves "Magic this", or "Magic that", hence my professional stage-name, "Magic Mike". with the onslaught of other "Magic Mike's" in the 1980's and '90's, I later had to specify "Magic Mike Likey", but for many years in Winnipeg I was known locally as "Magic Mike". Winnipeg even spawned a young magician, "Magic Joey", an alcoholic beverage known as "Mike's Magic Elixir", and a high-end amusement centre in a Charleswood mall, "Magic Mike's"! My, the power of television, although quite frankly it was Public Access television, which essentially meant that anyone and his dog could have a TV-show on that channel because of CRTC regulations. CRTC stands for Canadian Radio and Television Commission. The CRTC would later (in 1994) rescind it's law, causing all Public Access channels across Canada to shut down, and with that the end of "Magic Mike & Company" as well as numerous other TV-show on that channel which Winnipeggers refer to as "The Golden Age of Television". The Golden Age of Television included such luminaries as "The Pollack and Pollack Show", and "The Continentals", more on these later on. There was also "The Jaret Sereda Show" and "The Noreen Shane Show", both of which featured and supported local talent. When local Winnipeg television stations decided to shut down production of all children's programming in 1994, gone were new productions of "The Fred Penner Show" and a show on broadcast television that I had been a regular on since 1990, "S'Kiddle Bits" with Juno-award winning-host, Joey Gregorash. This downward spiral (which resulted in my relocation to Vancouver, Canada in 1994) in television quickly upturned several years later when, in 2000, the CRTC reinstalled it's Public Access policies once again. But it was too late for most of us children/family entertainers who had long moved onto better things. Thanks to television of the '80's and '90's, we were given an indelible mark on the consciousness of the public; it still amazes me to this day, how many Winnipeggers of certain generations still recall "Magic Mike's Castle", one of my three television shows.
Back to counting all my blessings.
If the face of Winnipeg television wouldn't have changed back in 1994, I wouldn't have been motivated to move onto other things. Don't get me wrong; for years in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg I had gainful employment as a Graphic Designer, Cartoonist/Caricaturist, and Magician, all at the same time! It still amazes me to this day, that I was able to buy a couple of houses on my salaries from these vocations, but nonetheless, I'm still grateful. With the loss of the television programs, and several of my regular clients, it was as if the rug was pulled out from beneath me, and I was thrown off; normally I would have just substituted these clients for several others, but there was something about losing the TV-shows that threw me off; it was as if I had "lost my gimmick", so-to-speak, as I was the only local magician to have a TV-show, and also, I'm told, it was the world's longest, regularly-produced TV-show about magic in the world! So there was also a record there; but it still threw me for a loop, and desperately seeking a new gimmick, I wrote and recorded in 1994 my second album, "M'ystery", the follow-up to my 1990 self-titled album "Magic Mike" which sold out in Winnipeg. I recorded it and mixed it in 24 straight hours, no sleep, with dedicated friends and musicians who had stood by my side for 13 years. With this in hand and a van filled with my belongings, we made our way to Vancouver in September of 1994. My girlfriend and I at the time had paired down six rooms of furniture into a crammed mini-van along with our two cats, seeking our fame and fortune. In retrospect, I should have dealt with and healed the trauma of apparently losing so much, (the shows and clients) but I did not, and subsequently suffered for it, arriving in this sight-unseen, bright and shiny new town with a bad attitude consisting of anger, resentment, and defensiveness. I slowly healed myself, but then I was treated very poorly (with verbal abuse almost daily and threats of physical abuse) at a New Westminster market where I had set up my retail business. I was unaware of the unusually large amount of drug addicts and people suffering from mental illnesses who resided there. Knowing this helped me to keep some semblance of perspective and objectivity. A year or so later, I began to lose all of my family members who resided in Toronto and Montreal, including my dad and favorite aunt in 1995, and favorite uncles in 1996, followed by my mother and other family members a few years later. This all resulted in my redefining myself yet again, (I had to "adapt" numerous times before) but also to finding "the real me" for the first time. I began to turn inward once again for answers, and I've never looked back! What seemed like tragedy and loss eventually resulted in my growth into a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Doctor of Theocentric Psychology, International Author, and BlogTalk Radio Host/Producer. For awhile I was right "down in the trenches", helping to heal the local down-and-outers, while in reality I was also healing myself. Now 23 years later my "humanitarian work" is sincere, not just about myself hanging on for survival. Again, I'm grateful for this. If you want to learn more about myself as "Dr. Michael Likey", find me on Facebook and search me on Amazon.
This book is all about Magic Mike Likey.
In reference to that; part of my re-empowering myself and coming back to magic after a 10-year absence, (to study and get three Doctorates) I jokingly and semi-seriously said, "I AM Magic Mike"! This was after returning several years ago to Winnipeg for a couple of book-signings, ("The Science of the Soul") and having a close friend say to me, "Smile, your glow rubs off on people; you glow when you smile; you ARE Magic Mike!" I realized the "power" in that statement: the character of "Magic Mike" that I had created and brought to life on stage and on television brings light and sunshine to people's lives, through his corny jokes, wondrous magic, and music; it re-empowers others, so why not re-empower myself through the very character that I had created? Why not indeed!
Thus, the title for this book was born, "I AM Magic Mike Likey!" to help to convey a little of the real magic in life that I've been able to experience, and hopefully to share with you to some degree. The various chapters in this book are in no particular chronological order, merely random musings of a mad magician! As a thought, idea, or remembrance came to me, I wrote them down. There is no rhyme nor reason to this book, outsiders will not likely get too much from it; Winnipeggers of "certain generations" most certainly will, and it's for you that I'm lovingly sharing my life as Magic Mike Likey!

Shaking Things Up-From I AM Magic Mike Likey! Collector's Edition

I recently did a special event show at a local Coquitlam/Vancouver Canada-area French community center; although I'm English, I was raised in Montreal, so technically I'm what we call out there an Anglophone (English-speaking) and a Francophone. (French-speaking) I feel really fortunate to have 3 languages, Yiddish being the third one. I use these relatively smaller special events (average 30 kids per show) as a live "dress-rehearsal" if you will, for my larger shows, for example I'm having a show this month-end and next month-end where there will easily be at least 200 people in attendance each show, along with press coverage, mayor attending, etc. I love all sizes of show, whether there are 10 kids, or 10,000. (Back when I moved to Winnipeg from Toronto in the early '80's, I did many shows there where often times there were at least that many folks in the audience!) It still puzzles me 22 years after relocating to Vancouver (a city of more than 2,000,000 people) from Winnipeg (a Prairie city of 700,000 people) why there is so little attendance to arts and cultures events; people would rather climb mountains and hike which is understandable, based on the great amount of nature out here, but how does one explain my Montreal, an equally beautiful city with just as much nature and mountains and a populace of well over 2,000,000-3,000,000 where the attendance to arts and cultures events is phenomenal! Oh, well...different kinds of people, I guess. Nonetheless, I decided to shake things up this particular show, as many of the kids have seen my shows over and over again, even with my inserting tricks from my "B" or "C" shows into the main one. For the non-performers out there, most magicians have several cases of shows; their main show which they "troop" with, (tour with) and those secondary and third cases of tricks/shows just in case they have more than one show at a venue in a day, where potentially it may be the same people showing up to watch...it's always nice to "shake things up", or insert a batch of other tricks or combinations there of. Remember that I've been doing magic professionally since 1981...there is absolutely no venue, or special kind of event that I haven't performed in; from close-up magic in restaurants, corporate events and bars, to malls, fairs, auditoriums, and even glamorous fashion-shows! Then there was my TV-show of 9 years, which forced me to re-invent a lot of tricks especially for that! Thank God I owned a magic-shop and I was able to buy a lot of tricks wholesale; magic is one of the most expensive hobbies in the world! Then there were the scores of doves and rabbits I had as pets and featured characters in my show, and the props necessary to produce and vanish the creatures. So I've owned millions of dollars of magic equipment including huge stage illusions, (at almost 60 years of age, I've long gotten rid of those larger props) which I've used over and over again. I even moved to Vancouver with the show I toured with and kept as my stand-by for 7 years before that. Prior to that I had a whole other show that I trooped with for another 8 years; so I knew the ins and outs of all of those tricks, the audience's reactions, the jokes and bits of business that either I or children had improvised which became permanent lines in my show's scripts...seeming to be improvised to the audience but in reality having been said hundreds of times; I know the timing of every word, every nuance, so that the "sneaky stuff" (misdirection and sleight-of-hand) would not be noticed, all the while trying to be entertaining and affable! This time however, I wanted to completely challenge myself and do a brand-new, untested (at least not by myself) show. The kids in most audiences already seem to love me, I guess they sense that I love them, so that's half the battle: there's a saying in magic, that if the audience likes you, they'll also like your tricks, and I have found this to be 100% true. So, with only a month's rehearsal, for the first time since 1981, I did a completely new show!

The New Show

I'll spare you what my most recent "touring" show was like, but suffice it to say that I had already worked in two of Jay Sankey's tricks, including his card-out-of-balloon, and "Sparkle", a card trick involving a party sparkler, where the magician succeeds in spearing a selected card with a lit sparkler. Yes, the audiences LOVED those illusions, but they also loved the "B" tricks from my old shows like "ropes through my body", which plays big and folds small into my doctor's bag; and then there's the oversized beautiful sponge rabbits that multiply in a spectator's hands! It pained me to eliminate these two tricks! Honestly, the opening effect is also crucial, and I literally "have a million of 'em", but the one that works 100% of the time with great audience reaction is "rope to silk", so I decided that that would be the only effect from my old show that I would include. It got the strong reaction that I am used to! The new Sankey effects included a magic plastic Coke loyalty card that transforms, a chopstick-impaled-through-a-coin, (with a hypno-swirl sticker placed on both sides) the very strong card-from-balloon, and "Sparkle" as the finale. Jay recently released a fantastic DVD about routines involving a finger-ring mysteriously appearing on and off a piece of black chord, and even includes the ring and beautiful rope! Since I had been performing a very similar illusion since 1993, I decided to integrate several of the moves from Jay's routines, (which included a nice rope-routine) and despite the difficulty of the newly-learned routine, received one of the best reactions that I've ever received from one trick! I LOVE this trick/routine which is from Jay's "Devil's Tail" DVD. I resurrected two more illusions that I've not performed since 1994, a very standard kids' show trick which is funny but baffling involving two large bamboo sticks and their "tissle and tassle", and another illusion where I freely count 6 jumbo cards, (and ONLY 6 cards!) removing three of them, but still having six cards over and over again! It usually evokes laughter and amazement, but this time (20 years later) it only seemed to encourage mild curiosity; this is one I'll do one more time in my next show to see if I need to change my routine (which I've done over hundreds of shows!!) or if that was just a freak reaction. Nerves? No way! Maybe a little anxiety, but because I rehearsed the individual tricks over and over for a month and then strung them together in a logical order, I felt really liberated during the performance and successfully (I'm told) ad-libbed a lot of new lines that will go into my future shows. Don't be afraid to "shake things up"...it just might be what your show needs!

Excerpt From "I AM Magic Mike Likey!"

An excerpt from "I AM Magic Mike Likey!"

COMMERCIAL OR FOR MAGICIANS?

In the world of magic, there are basically two types of audiences: a) lay-people/regular folk b) magicians (experienced, and inexperienced)
There are therefore tricks/illusions for lay-people, and tricks/illusions aimed at magicians.(I mean those who are more experienced and have seen it all and know all of the methods) In some instances, some tricks will overlap, and actually fool magicians; often times, these tricks can be tedious and boring, filled with complex and time-consuming sleight-of-hand, when a trick deck or gimmicked coin might have made the trick more visual, snappy, and interesting for the spectator, also allowing the magician leeway to relax, improvise his presentation and most importantly, ENTERTAIN, which as far as I'm concerned is the main reason for doing magic! I would much rather have my audience first be entertained, (laugh, for example) and secondly be fooled while I'm at it.
When I moved to Winnipeg in 1981 from Toronto, I inadvertently (due to my own lack of experience in the magic world) upset the experienced magicians. First, I charged an outrageously low fee for my shows, (which I felt justified at doing due to my lack of confidence and experience) and secondly because I by-passed a lot of difficult sleight-of-hand in favor of entertaining my audience; this wasn't because I couldn't do intricate sleight-of-hand, (I was very adept at coins and cards) but because I would much rather have, say, showed a deck of cards as appearing normal, then all blank, then all normal again, focusing on presentation. A sleight-of-hand-artist would have done all sorts of less-convincing and intricate moves to accomplish this, so focused on the sleights, that perhaps the presentation or patter might have suffered. Believe me, I saw plenty of this at the magic-clubs, and it just plain hurt to see all the knuckle-busting moves performed by the well-intentioned locals to accomplish the simplest of magical effects. I make no excuses for my methodologies, which made me the busiest and most commercial magician at the time, working at many bars and restaurants, and eventually corporate, private, and public events, malls, and fairs, not to forget birthday parties. I was having the greatest time, focusing on my personality and entertaining my audience first, and the tricks secondly, which apparently made for a successful formula. My audiences would laugh, and scream with delight AND amazement, which is exactly what I wanted, and still, hopefully, accomplish. I'm not bashing the "finger-flingers" here, merely pointing out my personal opinions and experience. There are amazing magicians out there who mainly use sleight-of-hand in their act, (usually to musical accompaniment) of which I still have the pleasure and honor of enjoying, but the methods are just not for me. I guess you can categorize me as a "Comedy Magician", if I must be stereotyped.
Nonetheless, there is a reason why I've shared this with you, and it's because in a couple of weeks I have what's known professionally as a "close-up gig", that is, I'll be "table-hopping", going table-to-table for a major corporate family restaurant doing my thing. It brought me back to my first regular restaurant gig doing magic at "September's" and also "Gabby's" in Winnipeg. How excited I was, pockets loaded up with sponge-balls, carting around a cutlery box filled with my close-up miracles, soft red velveteen working surface on top of it, and I intrusively placing this gaudily-painted box on top of the customers' tables; my enthusiasm obviously made them forget that they never asked that I come to their table, nor that the amount of room left for their meal was greatly diminished, but again, my enthusiasm must have blinded them; either that, or they were really nice, patient people!
Thirty-five years later, it will be myself, pockets and case (on the floor, out of their way) loaded up with the same tricks! This amazes me, because I've gone through hundreds of thousands of newer, more amazing close-up magic tricks, learned so many more sleights, and studied and practiced so many more tricks, many of which have made it into my stage show; but why not my close-up magic-show? To be frank, some newer ones have made the cut, and will be included, possibly a plastic spoon that twists itself out of shape that I give them to keep at the end of the routine, a coloring-page the size of a five-dollar bill that changes from a black-and-white line drawing to full-color, (this will take the place of the "bill-switch", where one denomination of bill visibly transforms into another denomination) and a few other ones; but the disappearing and appearing red silk hanky will still be present 35 years later, along with the cards that all go blank and normal again; heck, my "Clones" will make their appearance, (and disappearance) as well my Lucite "Hot Rod" will be present and many other what we call "chestnuts" in the world of magic! Why? Because my audience will be lay-people, not magicians. Why? Because these tricks are easy, they amaze, and they still ENTERTAIN.
